TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL, NIGERIANS HAVE COME OF AGE : Wealthy Nigerians to buy N448bn private jets .... PunchNews

A private jet
At least 12 brand new private jets ordered by Nigerians and some corporate bodies will be delivered to the country this year.
This is an offshoot of the projection by private jet manufacturers to deliver 70 brand new private jets to the country within the next five years.
The Regional Vice-President, Sales, Middle East, Africa and Turkey, Bombardier Business Aircraft, the Canada-based aircraft manufacturing firm, Mr. Khadar Mattar, who made the disclosure in an exclusive interview with our correspondent, described the private jet market in Nigeria as currently “booming.”
He spoke on the sidelines of Nigerian Economic Summit organised by London-based Economist in Lagos on Monday.
Mattar, who said his company delivered 88 out of the 138 aircraft currently flying in Nigeria, noted that Bombardier was currently the market leader in terms of the number of aircraft in Africa.
He said, “In Nigeria, we are looking at another 60 to 70 new business aircraft within the next five years; that is about 10 airplanes a year. There are 138 airplanes in Nigeria at the moment.
“Bombardier is currently leading the market in Nigeria and Africa. Twelve new ones should be delivered this year.”
According to him, the 12 new business aircraft to be delivered to Nigeria this year will be supplied by Bombardier and other private jet manufacturers, which he did not mention.
He also did not give the organisations and people who had ordered for the private jets in the country.
Other private jet manufacturers with significant market share in Nigeria are Embraer, Hawker Beechcraft, Gulfstream and Cessna Citation.
The state-of-the-art private jets being flown by business moguls, pastors, politicians and public office holders in the country are made by one of these manufacturers.
Mattar said medium-size and large-size private jets were currently more in demand in Nigeria because their owners were flying them to longer distances in Africa, Europe and other continents for business engagements.
As a result, he said the demand for small-size private jets were relatively low.
Most medium-size and large-size private jets currently go for between $30m and $65m.
Taking an average price of $40m per aircraft, the 12 new private jets slated for delivery in Nigeria this year are expected to cost about $480m (N76.8bn).
Also, the 70 new private jets projected for delivery in the country over the next five years are estimated to be about $2.8bn (N448bn).
The Bombardier senior official also said he expected the 138 private jets currently in the country to double to 276 in the next 10 years because of the manner the business aircraft market was growing in Nigeria.
Mattar said, “The business aviation market in Nigeria is booming. It is actually its time. I will expect that it will double in size in the next 10 years. People are flying outside Nigeria now; people are flying within Africa because of their business expansion; people are flying to Europe because of their business expansion and the financials that they require.
“Nigeria as a country has actually changed; we have more laws and regulations. Infrastructure is changing, which is adapting to the new expansion. Because of this, you will see more private jets actually flying in Nigeria.”
Aviation experts and analysts have said that Nigeria is the fastest growing aviation market in the world after China.
According to them, the global financial meltdown has made the private jet market to slow down in Europe and the United States, and private jet manufacturers are now turning to the Middle East, China and Africa for survival.
In the last two years, private jet manufacturers from the US, Europe and other parts have held several exhibitions in Nigeria and other parts of Africa in their bid to outdo one another.
A London-based aviation expert and Chief Executive Officer, African Aviation, Mr. Nick Fadugba, said lack of effective air link within Africa had created a major opportunity for the growth of the business aviation market on the continent.
He said most times, people travelled to Europe first on commercial airlines before they could connect some cities in Africa.
But the Bombardier official said Nigeria and other African governments needed to improve on existing aviation infrastructure to ensure more growth for the business aviation or the private jet sector within the continent.
Mattar said, “I am very optimistic about the business aviation market in Africa. People are now taking it seriously. They are looking at investing in fixed-base operations. They are looking at smaller airports to develop within and outside Africa.
“But it takes time. Infrastructure is needed. It is that serious in Africa, which is good for the business aircraft because people need to fly. Imagine I want to fly from Lagos to Namibia; it takes me two days to get there on commercial airlines. I will have to go to South Africa first before going to Namibia, or I have to go to Europe first. But with business aircraft, I can go and come back the same day and do my business.”

Tension In Southern Kaduna Over Alleged Interception Of Weapons
Posted: Apr, 02 2014, 7:04AM
By Saharareporters, New York
A security operative as well as several residents of the violence-plagued southern Kaduna report an air of tension in their area after reports spread that some weapons had been intercepted from some suspects in transit. A security source in Kafanchan, headquarters of Jema'a local government area, told our correspondent that residents are in a state of agitation after some youths started demonstrating and burning tires on hearing that some armed suspects were picked up in their area.
A security source disclosed that he had heard that the suspects were apprehended at a military checkpoint near the offices of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and the zonal office of the Ministry of Works and Transport in Kafanchan.
“I am not in Kafanchan now, but I am close. I am yet to ascertain the full and accurate account of what happened. But I have heard that some suspects were arrested with weapons at a checkpoint. And I was also told that the suspects are with soldiers who are interrogating them. Suddenly, I heard that hundreds of youths started trooping in demanding that soldiers give them the suspects. “The men on ground are saying that the youths are burning tires. This action has caused tension. Our military men are watching strategic locations in the town,” said the source.
Meanwhile, several residents of Kafanchan and surrounding towns confirmed that they were gripped by fear and tension as a result of reports that an undisclosed number of men were caught with weapons. “The soldiers have not briefed us on what is happening, so everybody is worried about what is happening and what will happen,” one resident said.

EXPLAINING THE INEXPLICABLE : Okonjo-Iweala Clarifies World Bank’s Poverty Rating Of Nigeria ... NAN

ngozi_okonjo_iweala_01
The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said World Bank’s “extreme poor nation’’ rating of Nigeria was based on the large number of poor people living in the country.
Okonjo-Iweala made the clarification when she interacted with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that World Bank President, Dr Jim Kim, on Wednesday in Washington, announced that Nigeria was among the world’s extremely poor countries.
The other countries that were also rated as Nigeria were India, China, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Pakistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya.
Kim had said “the fact is that two-thirds of the world’s extreme poor are concentrated in just five countries: India, China, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“If you add another five countries, Indonesia, Pakistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya, the total grows to 80 per cent of the extreme poor,” he said
Okonjo-Iweala explained that the number of poor people in a country irrespective of the country’s level of development was the parameter used to rate Nigeria among nations with high poverty level.
According to her, the phenomenon of large number of poor people is peculiar with middle-income countries which Nigeria belonged.
“Indian is a middle-income country, one of the largest economies in the world like Nigeria, is a big economy, but the largest number of poor people in the world reside in Indian, China and other places.
“Most middle-income countries, including Brazil have large number of poor people that is the reality of today and Nigeria is no exception.
“And when the World Bank president was talking he also talked about those countries. He mentioned that India is doing well and it has a large number of poor people,’’ she said.
“So, we should not try to single Nigeria out. The phenomenon we have in Nigeria is that we are growing but there are poor people everywhere,’’ she added
She advised that the focus of Nigerians now should be on the answers to the problem raised by the World Bank and what other countries were doing that Nigeria could learn from so as to improve.
“Nobody says that everything is fine but we are learning and where we make some progress like other countries, we should also acknowledge it,’’ she stressed.
She said that the Federal Government was making efforts in different areas of the nation’s economy to reduce poverty and improve living standards of the people.
According to her, President Goodluck Jonathan has mandated four or five of the ministers to work together to formulate a social safety programme to be implemented for the benefit of the citizens. (NAN)

Miyetti Allah threatens to sue the Federal Government.
At least 30 people believed to be Fulanis have been killed by a team of soldiers in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, residents have said.
The soldiers stormed the Fulani settlements about a kilometre away from Keana Town in the early hours of Thursday in a convoy, and allegedly shot at every Fulani in sight.
Most of the deceased were said to be over 70 years old who were not fast enough to flee the rampage.
A witness, Ibrahim Jalo, said that about 24 corpses were evacuated from the Fulani settlements on the road to Giza Town.
“I was on my way to the office when I saw people running and later saw soldiers rushing into the town in convoy asking for the Fulani. I saw over 24 dead bodies of Fulani being taken to Lafia in a white Hilux van,” he said.
When contacted, Muhammed Husseini, secretary of Miyetti Allah, a Fulani interest group, said that over 30 Fulani were killed.
Mr. Husseini accused the Federal Government of complicity in the killing of the Fulani. He declared that his organisation would sue the government and demand for the rights of its people.
“I’m presently in the mortuary receiving corpses. They killed over 30 of our men for no reason. This is genocide and we will approach the International Criminal Court, ICC,” he threatened.
The chairman of Keana Local Government Area, Haruna Oshegba, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES. He said that eight bodies were deposited at the Specialist Hospital, Lafia.
“There is crisis in my council and it is a military operation but I don’t know the details. I’m trying to piece information together to know exactly what happened,” he said.
When PREMIUM TIMES visited the hospital at around 2 p.m., a police Hilux van carrying nine bodies, and a pick-up van with a body of a dead Fulani woman were still stationed there.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Umar Numan, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident. He said that the command would address the press after getting full details on the matter.
The Nigerian military, which recently announced a heavy deployment of soldiers to Nasarawa, Benue, and Kaduna, is yet to react to Thursday’s incident.
The military announced the deployment following attacks on several communities in the states by suspected Fulani herdsmen leading to the death of scores of people.

The studied silence of former president Olusegun Obasanjo over the 2015 presidential primaries of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is giving the Presidency and the leadership of the party concern, LEADERSHIP WEEKEND can authoritatively report.
Since the historic letter written by Obasanjo to Jonathan which was leaked to the media and the reply of the same by the latter, both PDP leaders have stopped talking and Obasanjo has been keeping mum over the zonal rallies of the party.
The rallies which have taken place in Minna, Bauchi and Owerri are being used to test the ground with a view to selling the candidacy of Jonathan ahead of the time indicated on the INEC timetable. But the party hierarchy is said to be worried over how to bring Obasanjo back.
Checks show that some chieftains of the party have been trying all they could behind the scenes to reconcile both President Jonathan and Obasanjo in vain, and, according to one of them, it was the reply of Jonathan to his letter in which he gave it back to the former president that is making Obasanjo not to have anything to do with the party leadership.
“When Obasanjo’s letter came into the open, some of us warned against replying the letter while some cautioned against using the same tone, but those who are very close to the president who wanted him to reply had their way. Here we are now. We all know Baba; he would find it difficult to reconcile with President Jonathan and we need him,” a member of the PDP Board of Trustees said.
He explained that the like of Obasanjo are needed by the party with the desperation of the opposition who are hell-bent on pushing the PDP out of power come 2015.
“The next year’s election is going to be the toughest since 1960; there has never been a time when we have an assembly of influential and powerful aggrieved people who are hell-bent on wresting power from the ruling party like we have in APC. Ironically, those who are there today were once with us but left us because we could not swallow our pride and resolve our differences. This is why our new chairman (Adamu Muazu) is asking those who have left us to come back. This is the time we need people like Baba Obasanjo,” he said.
A political associate of Obasanjo disclosed to our correspondent that some forces have been contacting his principal on behalf of the Presidency and the party but explained that he has decided to be watching the unfolding scenario.
“People have been coming, asking him to reconcile with President Jonathan, but he has been telling them he is not fighting anybody but standing on the truth. He still stands on his position that it was wrong for Jonathan to run for a second term despite the pact that took him to power. They are saying Baba is wrong. But we are watching as events unfold. Up until now, President Jonathan has not said he desires a second term, but it is doubtful if there is anyone in the country who is not aware.”
Another source said, “If President Jonathan could apologise for the mistakes of the past and seek Obasanjo’s forgiveness, maybe… but if his government believes they could do without him, I wish them best of luck.”
Obj loyalists parley with APC in Ogun
Meanwhile, there are indications that former president Obasanjo’s faction of the PDP in Ogun State may have concluded plans to participate in today’s ward congresses of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The chairman of the Ogun PDP loyal to the former president, Senator Dipo Odujinrin, on Thursday led other chieftains of his faction to attend a strategic meeting of the APC.
The other chieftains of the Obasanjo faction at the meeting included the sacked national auditor of the PDP, Chief Bode Mustapha. The APC stakeholders’ meeting had in attendance Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the party’s national leader, Chief Olusegun Osoba, as well as National Assembly members from the state and state House of Assembly members,
Also on Friday, the media aide to Obasanjo, Mr Tunde Oladunjoye, attended a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the APC in Abeokuta preparatory to the conduct of today’s ward congresses.
Mustapha, who declined to speak for the other members of the Obasanjo faction of the Ogun PDP, told our correspondent on the phone that he had moved to the APC.
The former PDP national auditor also confirmed his participation in today’s ward congresses of the party. “I have moved as Bode Mustapha because of injustice. I cannot stay where there is injustice,” he said.

LOOK WHO'S TALKING AND HEAR WHAT HE'S SAYING : Sambo To Power Contractors: Deliver In 60 Days Or Get Fired ... Leadership News

Vice President Namadi Sambo yesterday gave a marching order to power distribution contractors to complete their contracts on the power projects within 60 days or get their contracts terminated.
Accordingly, he directed the managing director of Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Mr James Olotu, to communicate to the contractors the need to fast-track work to avoid the consequences of not completing their work within the stipulated period.
The vice president gave the directive at a meeting with the transmission and distribution companies in his office at the presidential villa, Abuja.
Noting that government was ready to assist the new owners to acquire transformers to enable them to distribute power in the event where they have need of them, Sambo added that the companies would buy the transformers from the Ministry of Power, while payment will be spread over a period of 15 years.
Not satisfied, he directed stakeholders at the meeting to also submit their plans on delivering energy metering within one week.
According to the vice president, the meeting was “conveyed to review the power supply situation in the country and essentially to work out strategies through which government investment through the NDPHC in terms of various assets at the distribution level could be completed and transferred to the Discos at a price to be determined later”.
In order to tackle most of the challenges faced by the new owners, the VP directed the transmission, distribution and Niger Delta power companies to meet and solve the problems facing their operations especially that of load shedding in parts of the country.
Decrying a situation where someone blew up a gas pipeline and the act of sabotage by others causing the problems experienced in Lagos and nationwide, Sambo said government places high premium in the power sector and has invested heavily in the gas project to supply to power stations.
He urged the transmission and distribution companies to be transparent in their operations and work together to achieve the desired result for Nigerians.
Earlier, Olotu briefed the meeting on the progress made by NIPP, even as he highlighted some challenges which included unavailability of 33 KV bays at the 132/33kV substations, inadequate transmission capacity at the TCN substation of Abuja, Ikeja and Port Harcourt Discos; security challenges in the north-east; and the issue of connection of weak existing 33 KV source to new completed injection substations in Kaduna and Ibadan.
The meeting observed that some Discos refused connection of completed project in Jos and Port Harcourt, even as it was discovered that lines work are being frustrated by aesthetic development along road works in Lagos and Rivers states.
It was also observed at the meeting that delayed procurement of last batch of materials, including automation equipment at Eko and Abuja Discos, was one of the challenges responsible for poor state of power supply across the area.
Other challenges identified include sub-optimal funds management while waiting for resolution of problems like security challenges and supply issues.
Why Jonathan has failed to keep promise on regular power supply in 2014 – Okupe
The senior special assistant to the president on public affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, has attributed the failure of President Goodluck Jonthan to deliver on his promised regular power supply by 2014 to alleged sponsored attacks on gas pipelines supplying the completed $16 billion Nigeria Integrated Power Projects (NIPP).
Okupe said preliminary investigations have shown that the sponsors of the attacks on the gas pipelines are politicians out to frustrate the successes of the present administration in the power sector and shut in the expected 4,000 megawatts needed to provide 18 hours’ regular power supplies to homes and businesses in the country.
Okupe, who made this known  in an interview with newsmen at the end of a two-day summit of state publicity secretaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yenagoa, said the decision to arrest the situation and effect repairs on the destroyed pipelines would take six weeks during which people would experience low power supply.
He stated: “It is a major concern to the present administration that there has been major drop in supply. This administration was able to, satisfactorily, unbundle the PHCN to the commendation of the international community. It was transparently conducted and evidently commended by all. With that in place, we believe the dynamics will not come to play. We had expected what happened in the telecommunication sector to take place in the power sector.
“But, unfortunately, those who are unrelenting in their attempts to ensure that they give a wrong perspective of President Goodluck Jonathan and his capacity to deliver and perform… It is an unhidden fact that there are some Nigerians in this country who are willing to put their lives down to ensure that President Jonathan is not perceived a performer in the country. When the president started to commission the NIPP projects and they started coming on stream, what did we experience? Pipeline vandalism all over the country. Major sabotage. In some places, gas pipelines that were buried six meters below the surface of the earth were blown. That is in excess of 18 feet down was blown up for several kilometres. We continued to play very dangerous games in the country and politicizing virtually everything. It is very obvious and clear to us that some people, knowing full well that, all things being equal, President Goodluck Jonathan will deliver on his promise on power, and believing that once that is done, Nigerians will have no other thing to do but return him if he decides to contest… so, because of that, people took a terrible decision and sabotage government efforts.
“As I am speaking with you, I have spoken to the managing director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, James Olotu, and he told me that the majority of the NIPP power plants, commissioned or not, are just there and not functional. They are not working. Not because they are defective but because they gas plants – they can only be made to work if you supply them gas. So, we have a huge investment of over $16billion lying down, fully completed, but saboteurs are about to kill the dream. This is the major reason the president has not delivered on interrupted power supply. Our major trust has been on gas for energy supply.
We have NIPP plants that can produce 5,000 megawatts but are being thrown out because some evil people have decided to punish Nigerians and give the president a bad name. We have installed power plants with installed capacity of 7,000  to 7,500 megawatts.”

NA WA FOR THIS MAN AND HIS PEOPLE O : Kidnap of Clark’s son carried out by Edwin Clark’s kinsmen – Police ... VanguardNews

SUSPECTEDkidnappers of Mr. Ebikeme Clark, son of elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, kidnapped Wednesday, at Kiagbodo, Delta State, has reportedly contacted the family, demanding about N50 million ransom for his release.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, however, told Saturday Vanguard that the police have arrested three of the suspected kidnappers and were inching closer to their hideout, warning that no ransom should be paid.
He said one of them confessed that he participated in the “planning stage of the kidnap,” adding that the police were working with ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo and other Ijaw groups to track down the kidnappers.
Mr. Ebikeme Clark
Mr. Ebikeme Clark
Aduba said the kidnap was carried out by Ijaw kinsmen of Edwin Clark and the police would burst the syndicate.
Elder statesman, Chief Clark was said to have briefed President Goodluck Jonathan, the governor of Delta state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and Mr. Aduba on the incident.
It was gathered that he called the Commissioner of Police on Wednesday when his son was kidnapped and had been calling him frequently since then with Mr. Aduba assuring him that the police were doing everything possible to secure the release of his son.
On how the ransom was demanded, a source told Saturday Vanguard yesterday, “The kidnappers made contact with family members of Mr. Ebikeme Clark in the late hours of Thursday, April 3. They (kidnappers) and Mr. Ebikeme Clark spoke with family members through Mr. Ebikeme Clark’s phone.”
“In their usual manner, the kidnappers demanded for ransom. We were informed it is within the region of N50 million,” he added.
But, there was a clear indication yesterday, that abductors may not have their way in the ransom demand, as the police, collaborating with ex-militant leaders were hot on their pursuit.
Commissioner Aduba told Saturday Vanguard unofficially where the police suspected the kidnappers were hibernating and the rescue efforts, but pointed out, “They are not for publication.”
Our independent investigation, however, showed the kidnappers were hiding somewhere in the creeks between Delta and Bayelsa states.
IYC spokesman, Mr. Eric Omare, told Saturday Vanguard, yesterday, “The IYC has mandated its officials in the riverine clans of Oporomor, Seimbiri, Ingbelebiri and Mein in Bayelsa and Delta States to swing into action and fish out the kidnappers of Mr. Ebikeme Clark, son of Ijaw National Leader and Former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief E. K. Clark. IYC,   investigation so far is to the effect that the kidnappers hideout may be somewhere in the creeks around Delta and Bayelsa States close to the coast, that is the communities near the sea though from experience kidnappers are never stationed in one place as they move from one place to the other to avoid been caught.
“ To this extent, all the Ijaw communities and community leaders in the communities close to the coastal parts of Delta and Bayelsa States have been contacted to form rescue team to comb all the creeks, towns and villages in a bid to free Mr. Ebikeme Clark without delay. The Ijaw people and communities are totally against kidnapping, sea piracy and other social vices.
“Also, some Ex-Niger Delta freedom fighters have volunteered to join forces with the IYC and security agencies to effect the release of Mr. Ebikeme Clark. While we appreciate the pains the Clark family may be going through, the IYC reiterate its position that ransom should not be paid to kidnappers. This is another case of commercial kidnapping; hence payment of ransom must be discouraged,” he said.
His words, “This incident coming shortly after the kidnap of the foster father of the President Jonathan and the relative of a Bayelsa State Commissioner has brought to the fore the need for all stakeholders in the Niger Delta to take drastic steps against kidnapping, sea piracy, oil theft and other social vices.”
“While condemning these vices, we wish to state that there is a direct nexus between these crimes and the economic situation of our people. Therefore, the IYC hereby call on multinational oil companies and state governments whose revenue has increased as a result of cessation of militancy in the Niger Delta region to perform their role of creating/providing jobs in the post amnesty era,” he added.
He asserted, “The concept of the Federal Government amnesty programme in the Niger Delta was for the federal government to mainly take care of the training while the oil companies and state governments are supposed to mainly handle the area of creation and provision of jobs. The IYC believes that creation of job opportunities is the long term solution to these social vices.”
Omare said, “The IYC would come up with its anti -kidnapping and anti- sea piracy strategy after the all Ijaw youths summit to be hosted by the Bayelsa state government on how to fight sea piracy, kidnapping, oil theft and other social vices.”

Tall, elegant and brilliant Nigerian medical doctor Isioma Ebegbodi was murdered in cold blood by her Nigerian husband in Texas state of America on Saturday March 22, 2014.She attended Queen's College Yaba Lagos and later proceeded to University of Lagos to study Medicine.
She was until her gruesome murder a medical resident physician at Marshfield clinic in Texas.

What really went wrong between a 36 year old wife and her 63 year old husband? Was she suffering in silence until the tragedy happened? So many questions with limited answers.
A 63-year-old Nigerian man was later charged with murder after he confessed to the shooting to death of his wife around 3 a.m on Saturday March 22,2014 in west Harris County, Texas USA.

Martin Ebegbodi went to a neighbour's house and asked him to call police after getting into a fight over argument and then shot his wife, 36-year-old Isioma Ebegbodi.
The Harris County Sheriff's Department arrived at the house in the 19700 block of Youpon Leaf Way and arrested Ebegbodi.
Gbemisola Boyede, former schoolmate to Isioma wrote this tribute  for her on Facebook

Here I am just as I was breathing the sigh of relief that justice was done in the case of Titi Arowolo murdered by her husband in a grotesque act in their own home here in Nigeria
And watching with bated breath the ongoing trial of Oscar Pistorius who shot dead his girlfriend in his luxury house in Pretoria on Valentine day
I got the rudest shock of my life that a colleague, friend, former classmate in medical school was shot dead at 3am on Saturday in Texas, United States by her own husband! This is too close home for comfort!
Someone tell me what's going on?
Why are people who professed to love forever and who vowed before God and man pulling the trigger to abruptly cut short the lives they are to protect?
How do we explain this to the innocent children who are going to be deprived for life of parental love and care? Mum is dead but dad isn't available because he's serving terms for killing mum?
How? How?? How???
Please if you're in an abusive relationship riddled with domestic violence, this is the time to get out!
Please stop keeping the front of happiness when you're dying inside!
The society may not understand, we may even condemn ignorantly
But you owe it a responsibility to those innocent children to be ALIVE!
Please get out NOW to a safe house
I don't want to ever mourn another victim of spousal or domestic abuse
I can't begin to describe all the emotions I'm going through
So you can only imagine what her parents, sister and children will be going through!
This is so sad and how many times I've wished in the last 48 hours, we can turn back the hand of the clock!
Rest in peace Isioma, Issy Awele Ebegbodi and I pray God comfort your children and family and us all mourning you!
It shall be well!
With deep sadness, We announce the untimely passing of our dear friend and Colleague OGQC (93, "Z" set) Dr Isioma Ebegbodi Nee Unokanjo on Saturday 22nd March,2014 in Texas in the most tragic circumstances.
From a confirmed source,Isioma's friends and colleagues from Medilag(Unilag medical school) and concerned Nigerians are presently collecting funds together towards her three children’s education.
May God grant her family and friends the fortitude to bear this immense loss.

David Idah, the houseboy of retired Chief Magistrate Funmilola Timeyin who killed her at her residence in Laderin Estate in Abeokuta on March 28th says he killed her because she sacked him.
Idah, in an interview with Punch, said he and his boss had a good relationship when he started working with her but they fell out when she started to complain about his attitude. Idah says he wasn't paid his salary and so stole two mobile phones, a DVD player, speakers, perfume, wrist watches, three trousers and four shirts belonging to her son in order to sell them, get money and leave.

She discovered he had stolen these items and invited the police who came in and was about to begin prosecution of the 21 year old Benue indigine when she (Justice Timeyin) pleaded with them to let him off the hook and even wrote a letter of withdrawal to the police. She said she did not want Idah tried but she sacked him and told him not return to work for her again. Continue...

A few days after he was released from police custody and angered by his sack, Idah went to the retired judge's house, scaled the fence, got hold of the cutlass he used for gardening and waited for her to step out of her house and then attacked her with the cutlass, cutting her three times on the neck. She screamed for help which attracted her neighbors and vigilante in the area who caught Idah in the bush behind the house where he had gone to hide and was trying to escape...

Sadly Justice Timeyin died before she could get to the hospital.
Idah was employed by the 65year olf retired chief Magistrate to help around her house since all her children had all grown up and left the house. Idah was yesterday arraigned before the magistrate, Anthony Araba, of the Magistrate Court 1 and pleaded guilty to one count charge of Murder.

The traditional marriage of Jonathan’s foster daughter is currently going on in Beyelsa and here are some first photos courtesy of Maestromedia and Helen Ozor. The traditional marriage journey began last night Friday, April 4, 2014 at about 7pm, with the payment of bride price and exchange of gifts between the 2 families, it's part of the rites that must be observed. Though, it wasn't the main event itself, in attendance were the family members on both sides and a sprinkling of friends, the likes of Hajia Bola Shagaya, Senator Ben Obi, Ifeanyi Uba, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, Governor Liyel Imoke, some 1st ladies and many more.

The ceremony we heard started at about 7.30pm when the President and his beloved wife-Patience arrived at the venue of the event, which was a beautifully decorated marquee that had been erected in the President's compound. And things began in earnest. The groom's entourage from Cross Rivers State we heard was led by the Governor of his state Governor Liyel Imoke. As expected there was exchange of pleasantries between both families. The Edward's entourage was asked what their mission was and they stated it was about a beautiful flower in the Goodluck's vineyard that they had come to enquire about. Whom their son would love to have as wife forever.

From the initial intro to the fun haggling on the bride price, which started from 1 million and was finally pegged and agreed to at N50,000. Thereafter the agreement, the groom and family then went on to present many gifts to the bride's family and community.

The day's event was rounded off with the President speech inviting all and sundry to come back the next day (today) from 12 noon to finish what had begun the night before. And also so they the groom's family could come take away their wife, as it was too late on Friday for her to be released to them.

A NATION OF PARADOXES ... FOR THE RECORDS : Sam Nda-Isaiah: Is Nigeria a poor country of rich men or a rich country of poor men?

By Sam Nda-Isaiah
About six years ago, a senior political staff of the British High Commission in Nigeria shared a joke he had had with some of his colleagues in London with me. He was in the company of his colleagues from other parts of the world in the UK and they were joking among themselves. One of them boasted that he was serving in the largest country on earth; another bragged that he was serving in the largest economy in Europe. My friend then proudly proclaimed to his friends that he was serving in Africa’s biggest economy, meaning Nigeria. When he told me this, I responded straightaway that he was mistaken, as South Africa was officially Africa’s biggest economy by real GDP. But my friend countered me immediately and said that he did not believe the official figures. According to him, the Lagos economy alone was bigger than that of Kenya, East Africa’s biggest economy, and that from what he had seen in Nigeria and South Africa, he did not believe that South Africa’s economy was bigger than Nigeria’s. I kept quiet. Even if he was wrong, I wanted to enjoy my own 15 minutes of fame.
So when news came that Nigeria would be rebasing its GDP in order to upgrade the country’s GDP figures, something it had not done in 24 years, I waited to see the new figures with keen interest. When the figures came out yesterday, putting our GDP at $509.9 billion as against South Africa’s $353 billion, I was not surprised. What only came out is that we had surpassed South Africa a long time ago and we did not even know it. That also shows the level of unseriousness of those who govern the nation. And, if as we now know, Lagos alone contributes a quarter to Nigeria’s GDP. The Lagos economy alone is larger than the economies of Kenya, Libya, Ghana and Tunisia.
It’s not difficult to appreciate why this should be so. In the 24 years since the last GDP value was estimated, there has been spectacular growth in a number of sectors including the telecoms sector. Twenty-four years ago, there were only about 300,000 phone lines owned solely by Nitel. Today, there are about 120 million phone lines owned by a slew of operators. The flour milling capacity alone ranks among the largest in the world and all the products are sold and consumed within Nigeria.
Twenty-four years ago, there was no Nollywood, Nigeria’s booming film industry considered to be the world’s third largest producer of films in the world after the United States’ Hollywood and India’s Bollywood. If we add the burgeoning Kannywood and others, then, the ratings may actually be different.
Twenty-four years ago, Aliko Dangote had not become a sovereign unto himself; today, he is about to displace Lafarge as the biggest cement producer in Africa – a market that currently enjoys a 20 per cent growth rate and will continue to grow at this rate for the next 20 years. And if Aliko Dangote carries out his threat of refining Nigeria’s crude and selling to Nigeria’s 174 million people-strong domestic market, then it will only be a matter of time for him to get to become the richest man in the world, considering our growth rate.
Twenty-four years ago, crude oil was selling less than $30 per barrel most of the time; today it sells for over $100 per barrel and it has been so for much of the past 14 years. Twenty-four years ago, we didn’t have the size of the banks we have today and the size of financial services on offer. So a lot has happened and our GDP should have been rebased in 2000 and another rebasing done in 2010 as it is customary to do every 10 years. In fact, many nations do it every three years. It should be made clear that this geometric growth happened long before Jonathan came to power.
With this rebasing, every other figure will also change, and that should not be good news for Jonathan. Our economic growth rate under Jonathan, which we were told was at about 7 per cent, will now be revised down and would probably be in the region of 3.5 per cent or less, and this will make more sense. And the nation’s gini coefficient which is a measure of income distribution within a country will also deteriorate; this should scientifically explain the World Bank’s report on the extensive poverty rate in Nigeria.
But all this does nothing to the 70 per cent of Nigerians who are desperately poor. Nigeria remains a country of paradoxes. It’s not just Africa’s largest oil producer which also imports refined oil products, it is also Africa’s largest economy with the highest incidence of poverty. Just as the country was busy trying to rebase its GDP, news came from the World Bank that Nigeria is one of the countries with the highest number of desperately poor people in the world. While Nigeria has the highest number of private jet owners on the African continent – at the last count they were more than 200 – the same Nigeria has the largest number of desperately poor people in Africa and one of the largest in the world. Of the 174 million people in Nigeria, 122 million people live in desperate poverty, using the acceptable extreme poverty line of $1.25 a day.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s finance minister, quickly responded to the World Bank’s report by saying that it was a matter of Nigeria’s population especially as China and India, the world’s most populated countries, were also on the World Bank’s list. Okonjo-Iweala obviously found sop in the fact that China and India were on the list. She was extremely happy about that. But, like almost everything about the Jonathan government, she was telling only half the truth.
Yes, large population must have contributed to Nigeria being included by the World Bank on that infamous list; what Okonjo-Iweala did not say is that while China has steadily lifted nearly 700 million people out of poverty in the last 20 years, Nigeria has added 105 million new desperately poor people during the corresponding period. And while India has lifted 138 million people out of poverty in the last seven years alone, Nigeria has added nearly 50 million people to the list of extremely poor people during the corresponding period, most of them coming with the Jonathan presidency.
And this should surprise no one: Poverty in a nation has a linear relationship with the rate of looting that leaders afflict on their countries. According to the official figures, there are more than 122 million desperately poor people in Nigeria at the moment. In 1981, the figure was 17.1 million poor people and, in 2004, it was 68.7 million. So is Nigeria a rich country of poor men or a poor country of rich men? We can argue this forever. But Nigeria will continue to defy logic until the right people take over the helm. And one thing is sure: if with all the looting we currently see, where $20 billion can just get missing without a trace, Nigeria is still standing and growing, then, with proper people in charge, Nigeria will start competing with the biggest and the best in the world.
And if Jonathan’s handlers intend to portray the new GDP figures as an achievement for their principal, they must be more illiterate than many of us had thought!
EARSHOT
Why I Am Doing This…
Last week, I stepped down (some people say I am “stepping aside”) as the chairman of LEADERSHIP Group. I did so because I had declared my intention to contest for the presidency of the country on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). I did not need to resign and certainly no law required me to do so, as LEADERSHIP is a privately-owned company. But I decided to do so of my own volition because I thought that would be the proper thing to do.
I can also confidently step aside because I know there are competent hands to watch over the newspaper group and the business. I have no doubt that the company will continue to grow without me. I have nurtured it to that level.
While it is not yet time for campaign, and I am certainly not doing that at the moment, it will suffice to say that I am entering the race for the presidency because I believe that Nigeria needs a new direction. I completely believe that Nigeria cannot survive another term of Jonathan and all men of goodwill must join the fray one way or the other for the rescue mission that our nation direly needs. Nigeria currently needs a knowledge-based, brand new leadership that will not only pull the country back from the precipice but also unite the nation’s diverse and disparate groupings and interests. Our size, disparity and diversity should be a huge advantage and not a weakness or even a threat as the current leaders are trying to make it. Nigeria needs a leadership that knows that the first responsibility of the president is the security of the people and the first priority of a nation should be the education of its youths. Nigeria urgently needs a leader that will quickly engage the nearly 50 million unemployed people and tackle the current 80 per cent graduate unemployment by modifying our education system into one that produces graduates who would be employers of labour instead of seekers of good jobs. Most importantly, I am joining the race for the presidency because I believe, and I know, that only big ideas and big dreams change a nation. And here, I am talking of the kind of big ideas that have changed the course of history of some of the greatest nations of the world – whether it is  Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana land purchase, which accounts for as many as 15 states in today’s United Staes; J.F. Kennedy’s moon-landing programme; Deng Xiaoping’s China’s economic transformation programme; Lee Kuan Yew’s leap-frogging of Singapore from Third to First World; or Mandela’s lessons in tolerance and forgiveness. By the time we complete our tenure, Nigeria would not be the same again.
If I did not think this is possible, I would not be wasting my time, and leaving a job which I was enjoying thoroughly.

A baby boy aged just NINE MONTHS sobbed as he appeared in a Pakistani court accused of planning murder.
Bewildered Muhammad Mosa Khan clutched a bottle of milk as he sat on his father’s lap.
The baby boy – along with other members of his family – were also accused of threatening police and interfering in state affairs after a raid to catch suspected gas thieves in Lahore.
Muhammad first appeared calm but began crying when his grandfather took his thumb and dipped it in ink to leave the print on bail forms instead of a signature.
An official named as sub-inspector Kashif Ahmed has reportedly been suspended for registering the case against the child, which has since been dismissed.
Muhammad’s father said the group had been protesting against a shortage of electricity in their area, The Times of India reported.
Police say they were attacked with wooden rods and pelted with stones.
Little Muhammad was said to have thrown a rock according to one report but another Indian newspaper blamed administrative incompetence on the part of the police.
Grandfather Muhammad Yassen said: “He does not even know how to pick up his milk bottle properly. How can he stone the police?”
Criminal cases in Pakistan often feature several family member involved in vendettas though it is rare for an infant to be accused, one supreme court lawyer said.
Defence lawyer Chaudhry Irfan Sadi said: “This case exposes the incompetence of our police force and the way they are operating.”
The Punjab’s chief minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered a report from the police and demanded “stern action” against the officials responsible for bringing the case,
Police operations director Rana Abdul Jabbar said: “A nine month old can never commit such a crime.
“This incident took place due to sheer misunderstanding on the police’s part and was not done on purpose.”

OF REBASING OUR GDP AND REGAINING OUR LOST GLORY : Poverty of Voodoo Statistics, By Jibrin Ibrahim ... PremiumTimes

Jibrin Ibrahim

Yesterday, our dear country Nigeria leap-frogged South Africa and became Africa’s largest economy. We did this by changing the base line for calculating our GDP from 1990 to 2000. This rebasing boosted our economic growth by about 75%. The economy grew from $292 billion dollars to $510 billion in one day.
By this statistical feat, we have progressed from the 37th to the 26rd largest economy in the world. The economy of South Africa is a mere $384 billion so let’s all feel good; we are the greatest in Africa. My very warm congratulations to our Minister of Finance who made the announcement yesterday.
The South Africans have upset our feelings by being members of G20 thereby stealing our position as the greatest African nation and now we can begin our revenge. The most painful was when the BRIC quickly developing countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India China were to be expanded by one, we all expected it would become BRINC with the edition of Nigeria. Instead, it became BRICS with the addition of South Africa. Now its settled, we have the largest African economy since 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon.
Let me say up front that I do not think that we are falsifying facts, even if we are embellishing them a little bit. Most governments overhaul GDP calculations every five years to reflect changes in output and consumption and we have not done ours for over twenty years.
When Ghana rebased its GDP in 2010, output jumped 60 per cent and from one day to the next, Ghana became a middle-income country. For Nigeria, our government is hoping that being the continent’s number one economy could prove an irresistible magnet for foreign investors.
Under the leadership of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, what we did was to update the contributions of new sectors of the economy. Nollywood come in very useful as the estimate of its annual contribution to the Nigerian economy jumped from $500 million to $7 billion, an incredible jump maybe, but why not, it’s all about good fiction. Thanks to the rapid growth of the telecommunications sector, Nigeria has become Africa’s biggest mobile market with an estimated 167 million subscriptions, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission.
There is no doubt that Nigeria has been growing as a destination for foreign investors owing to the size of its consumer market and the increasing recovery of the capital market. Shoprite and Walmart are moving in massively into the country precisely because of the growth of the consumer market. The consumer industries such as Nestle, Heineken, Cadbury and Unilever are doing very well.
Our own Dangote Cement has already made the transition from a Nigerian to an African giant. There is a credible narrative about the growth of the Nigerian economy.  The problem with statistics however is that they only tell part of the story. In reality, the 75% growth of our economy that happened yesterday would not mean any change in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. We will continue to live without electricity supply and potable water. The potholes on our roads will not disappear. And the insecurity in the land will continue.  Our economy is today apparently larger than that of Austria, Malaysia and Thailand.
The real issue for me however is what does it really mean to say our economy is the largest in Africa. Nigeria remains a very poor country with almost 70% of the population living below the poverty line. No Nigerian city has potable water for up to 30% of inhabitants. South Africa has a population of 52 million people compared to Nigeria’s 170 million. South Africa’s GDP per capita is however $7,508 compared to $1,555 for Nigeria according to 2012 statistics. South Africa’s electricity production is 40,000 megawatts and will double by 2025 to continue feeding its large industrial base while in Nigeria; we are currently struggling to produce 3,000 megawatts.
Just last week, the World Bank President classified Nigeria among the world’s five extreme poor countries. In a quick response, the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, challenged the classification, which is based on the large number of poor people living in the country. She argued that using the number of poor people in a country, irrespective of the country’s level of development, as the parameter to rate Nigeria among nations with high poverty levels, was wrong. She added that the phenomenon of large number of poor people was peculiar to middle-income countries, which Nigeria belonged.
Citing the example of India, a middle-income country, which is one of the largest economies in the world like Nigeria, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala said the largest number of poor people in the world reside in India, China and other places. Nigeria, she concluded, was no exception, as the reality today was that most middle-income countries, including Brazil, have large number of poor people.
For 100 million Nigerians living below the poverty line, what is the comfort of knowing that there are also lots of poor people in other developing countries such as Brazil and India? For Nigerians, the real problem is that they do not see the benefits of the 15 years of constant economic growth that we have had. Yes, it’s true that they have seen more Nigerians join the Forbes list of the world’s richest people but the Nigerian people know that their lives and livelihoods are worsening every day.
This is where I have a problem with the positive spin Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is always giving the economy. Again last week, she announced with glee that “after two months of methodological work, the statisticians have come up with the data that 1.8 million people in the country enter the job market yearly. I am happy to tell you that last year we were able to create 1.6 million jobs. So we are getting close to the 1.8 million that enter the job market.” She must be the only person in Nigeria to believe that we created 1.6 million jobs last year.
What we do know is that the National Bureau of Statistics is under enormous pressure to produce positive economic spin. What we see with our eyes is the pathetic photographs of hundreds of thousands of young people desperately struggling for the Nigerian Immigration Service jobs and being killed in the process. She should take us seriously and show us where the jobs were created and who got them. In most countries, job statistics is not under the control of government and is done by independent bodies. Why do we have a situation in which government officials can tell us anything they want to on job creation? The new statistics may be true but voodoo too as all Africans know is a true science. Voodoo statistics can make us feel good but it’s more important to address the problems of 100 million Nigerians living below the poverty line.

Festus Iyayi
The Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC, has blamed the Kogi State Governor’s convoy and construction firms handling the Abuja-Lokoja road for the accident that killed a university lecturer, Festus Iyayi.
Mr. Iyayi, a former leader of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, died in a car crash last November while travelling to Kano for an emergency meeting called by the union in respect of a lingering nationwide strike by university lecturers.
The corps released the findings of its investigation on the causes of the accident following a Freedom of Information, FOI, request by the chambers of a senior lawyer, Femi Falana.
The report said the accident was caused by the failure of the driver of a black Toyota Hilux pick-up van in the governor’s convoy, carrying seven policemen, to move to his lane of travel despite the fact that the road has been confined to a two lane roadway following the protracted construction work on the road.
According to the FRSC findings, Danladi Baba, the driver of the Toyota Hilux pickup, travelling “on a high but determined speed, southbound of the road, deliberately failed to return to and stick to his lane of travel.
“Contributing to the injury severity was speed; the direction of the impact and one of V#1 (Toyota Hiace Bus) body reinforcement material which pierced through the heart area of the fatally injured.”
The investigation also blamed the construction companies building the Abuja-Lokoja Road for failing to provide adequate guidance and channelization.
The Corps advised that governors’ convoy “maintain adequate lane discipline and desist from running other vehicles off-road.” It also instructed politicians to regulate speed limits for convoy drivers, saying politicians should liaise with the FRSC for proper orientation and enlightenment of drivers.
The FRSC also advised government and construction companies to accelerate the completion of the Abuja-Lokoja road to avoid further deadly accident on the road. The road has remained under construction for several years and has become notorious for deadly road mishaps causing the death of several people.
Mr. Iyayi was a popular novelist. He won the Commonwealth Literature prize in 1988 for his novel “Heroes.”
